Apical has been doing regeneration surveys since 2003, and as the surveys changed so did Apical in moving from a paper to a spatial digital data system. All surveys are georeferenced and processed in a format compliant with our customers. Apical to ensure quality of all surveys handles it from a turn key perspective, right to hiring out external contractors to ensure quality standards are solid in providing a good product to our customers. Our technicians have extensive experience in conducting stocking surveys to assess early planting survival and efficacy of site preps and stock choices. Our regen survey teams are also training compliant for all RSA surveys, including CSR, establishment, aerial performance, non-photo protocal, recon, as well as understory protection surveys.
Apical Forestry Consulting was formed from Mackenzie Reforestation Ltd. a company that pioneered pre-harvest silviculture prescriptions in Alberta. The employees of Apical to date have completed over 100,000 ha of site specific silviculture prescriptions for industrial clients in Alberta and British Columbia. If you need ecological land classifications done Apical has the background to do this, as well as the capability to do soil classification to the great groups or more. But not only is knowing what your working with important, you need to strategize how to maximize your growth potential, Apical has that knowledge base. Choosing the best strategy and type of harvesting, scarifying and planting can make all the difference on achieving free to grow, as well as keeping the costs down. Apical has the skill set to do all of this.
As the practice of forestry moves from meeting the needs of basic reforestation into the need for continual stand maintenance, tending prescriptions will insure that future stand growth is optimized. Species control and density management will optimize crown development for optimum value of regenerating stands. The foresters and technicians of Apical have prepared over 45,000 ha of stand tending prescriptions for industrial clients throughout Alberta. Doing the correct tending prescriptions can save significant dollars and get you to free to grow ASAP, saving everyone money.
Apical has planted over 1.5 million trees a year for the past 5 years. Apical focuses on the more technical or specialized planting. In the past 3 years Apical has planted over 600 reclaimed leases, 20 kms of road and over 200 cutblocks. This requires extensive planning, ordering of correct seedlots, solving tough access, and to be blunt a swack of experience. Combine that with coordinating with scarification equipment and planning the proper treatment and Apical is a leader in their field of forest reclaimation. On the planting front Apical only hires experienced planters with solid quality. We have the ability to take the entire project on from turn key and keep it on budget and do it meeting or exceeding safety standards. All Apical planters are ticketed in first aide, H2S, TDG, Wildlife Encounters, ESO, and are substance free.
Apical has been for the past 10 years doing seed and scion collection for tree improvements programs for mills in Alberta, from aspen to black spruce, from pine to willow. We have also done it for bulk silvaculture programs as well however only the more technical programs. With this Apical has also done superior tree collection throughout most of Alberta.
Our technicians use the most up to date hardware and software to generate GPS and GIS files. We have used GPS to map cut blocks, stand tending polygons, site index trees, road locations, watercourse crossings, superior cone collections and site preparation treatment unit boundaries. Apical’s staff have processed over 19,000 ha (>4.4 million linear metres) of layout data over the past two years.
Apical has the ability to track down and find basically any cutblock or oil lease in the province, and convert it into a GIS spatial reference with whatever data request is needed. By compiling databases from government, industry and research Apical has compiled an incredible database.
With the combined abilities of a staff well trained in layout and GPS, Apical has a formidable layout team. Our team uses a combination of aerial photos, ortho photos, AVI and contour maps to complete the task efficiently and accurately. We want it done right the first time because there isn’t a second chance when reputation is at stake.
Permanent sample plots (PSP) are research plots designed to provide up-to-date volume and growth information. These plots are distributed throughout the forested area and give the companies an idea of the stand dynamics that are occurring within on their landbase. Our company understands that accurate permanent sample plot measurements are important information used to implement long term and sustainable plans. Apical has completed a variety of different research PSP’s over the year. From High Level to Sundre, to Fort McMurray to Blue Ridge. We have completed them for industry as well as government and all customers have been satisfied with the product given and the projects are done to meet the economic needs of the customer.
Our foresters and technicians have experience in managing tree-planting quality assessments. Apical Forestry Consulting Ltd. has years of experience in stock quality, handling, logistics, pay plot inspections, audit documentation, and productivity analysis. As well as tree shipment monitoring, ordering and hiring of planting contractors.
Apical has been doing herbicide layout and monitoring for both aerial and backpack spraying programs. We have the skill base to do it from start to end, and have been doing it for the past 8 years, with over 10,000 ha under our belt. We have been involved in the entire process from informing the public to the government reporting. We currently have two staff with their Pesticide Applicator Certificate (Industrial and Forestry). As well as our company registered.
Apical has quite a substantial amount of experience with timber cruising and analysis. Our latest project included laying out and cruising over 3000 ha of CTP cut blocks throughout Alberta. The technicians and foresters on staff use both government and single stem calculations to produce volumes for areas laid out. We had the opportunity to work with some of the most cutting edge software and learn from some of Alberta’s best scientists in volume analysis. Apical has also done a considerable amount of Temporary Sample Plots and analysis of the volume, as well as Volume Sampling Plots.
Foothills Pine Growth and Yield:
The Foothills Pine Growth and Yield (FPGY) association is comprised of eleven companies and organizations operating on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. In 2000, with the help of the Foothills Research Institute, these companies started a co-operative to forecast and monitor the growth and yield of managed lodgepole pine stands. Apical was one of the consultants to used to develop these sites and we are the one last one still managing these sites and monitoring. We were part of the initial planning process for site establishment. By completing ecological site classification for each we were able to determine the best locations. We have been solely responsible for the maintenance, measurements and tending needs of the sites since their creation in 2001.
Tree Improvement Progeny Site:
Apical has been involved in all aspects of progeny sites from the tracking of the best trees in the FMA’s of Alberta, to the collection of the seed, for the finding of and establishing the areas to plant the sites, to the laying out of the 1000s of pigtails and the planting of the sites. Not only that we maintain these sites, we measure and collect the scions for most of these sites in Alberta as well. Our references on this are Companies such as Weyerhaeuser, Canfor, West Fraser, Millar Western, as well as for AESRD.
Woodland Caribou and Lichen Research:
The woodland caribou is a federally listed endangered species in Canada. Companies have identified that traditional forest practices do not meet the needs of these animals and have been developing strategies to lessen the impact of forest activities on the caribou populations.
Apical has been able to assist researchers examining the feeding habits of caribou and their general movements. This research project looked at the effects of logging on the growth of terrestrial lichens, a main source of food for caribou during the winter months.
Western Boreal Growth and Yield (WESBOGY):
Apical has been involved with the maintenance and measurement of WESBOGY sites throughout Alberta, B.C. and the the Northwest Territories. Most of these sites are in their 20-25 year and are really starting to show some interesting results.
The purpose of these research sites are to gain a better understanding of the stand dynamics and growth and yield of white spruce and aspen. Framing mainly the relation each has a need for each other for their development.
Our certified surveyors have completed over 6000 ha of MPB surveys throughout Alberta in the past few years. Our surveyors have completed large contracts for ASRD and smaller contracts for sites such as mill yards, progeny sites and seed orchards.
Apical is also a service provider for FRIAA for the Grande Prairie, Hinton, and Peace area. In which we manage the silvaculture practices of the land bases harvested under the community timber program. We take great pride and responsibility in the opportunity to do this, as well as the excitement of being able to practice silvaculture responsibility to the best of our ability and do it as frugually as possible.
